Wulfenite (red)

Item Description

Here we have a beautiful specimen of Wulfenite from the Santa Ana Mine in Caracoles, Antofagasta, Chile. What really makes this one special is that the Wulfenites have a definite red color, not yellow or orange, but truly red. There are a good number of little (up to about 3 mm), sharp, lustrous, pseudo-octahedral crystals (tetragonal pyramidal with basal terminations) all over the piece. The label from Mauricio and Rossana Dini states that there is minor Iranite on the piece as well, but I can't find it, and the species is not listed as occurring from this locality according to mindat.org. We've photographed the piece with a Canon MP-E 65 mm macro lens to better illustrate the quality. A beautiful example of this fairly hard to find material.
