Wulfenite (rare BLACK crystals)

Item Description

Wulfenite is beloved because it's a notably colorful mineral, found typically in orange crystals, but yellow, red and green examples have been found in various localities. I've even seen blue Wulfenites from Tsumeb, but this piece features strikingly BLACK crystals, which is rather rare for the species. This small cabinet specimen hails from the famed Glove Mine, well-known for its excellent Wulfenites, often seen in larger than average sized crystals in yellow to caramel to orange hues. The crystals on this specimen are very sharp and lustrous, with a typical tabular habit, measuring up to 5 mm. We have photographed them with a Canon MP-E 65 mm macro lens to better illustrate the quality. No real damage that I can see, and what a cool oddball piece to add to any secondary mineral suite, a collection of Wulfenites, or a collection of minerals of Arizona.
From the collection of Gary Weaver of Prescott, Arizona (1944-2019). Gary was an electrical engineer who worked for many years for Hughes Aircraft in California. After retiring to Prescott, Arizona in the early 2000s, Gary rekindled his childhood love of minerals, amassing a collection of roughly 2000 specimens focusing on localities in which he and his wife had lived or visited (Mexico, Peru and the western / southwestern United States). The piece was originally part of the collection of Paul Andrade, M.D. and was collected by Dave Shannon in April of 1991.
