Wulfenite (old classic material) (ex Bob Reynolds Collection)

The mines at Mezica (Miess) in the former Yugoslavia have produced some of the most iconic Wulfenites in Europe. This piece features sharp, notably thick, lustrous, gorgeous orange colored, square crystals of Wulfenite measuring up to 1.3 cm on edge. There are literally crystals on every side of the specimen, and they range from bright orange or more of a caramel or butterscotch hue. The crystals are very good quality and beautiful to view up close. You can see that some of them show attractive "banded" color zoning, and they almost look like little sandwiches. The piece overall is in good shape, but there is a contacted area on the display side where several crystals have been broken. A showy and dramatic display quality specimen of this famous material. One of my favorite aspects of these Wulfenites is that they are hefty, stable and not brittle like so many delicate pieces from Arizona or Mexico, so it can be handled with ease and you don't have to worry about crystals breaking off or crumbling. If you collect secondary ore minerals, general Wulfenites or minerals from central Europe, don't miss out on this attractive old time specimen dating back many decades. Bob was a well-known fossil and mineral expert and former Curator of Earth Sciences at the San Bernardino County Museum in California. The rare phyllomanganate-chromate species Reynoldsite was named in his honor in 2011.
