Item Description

The famous Red Cloud Mine in Arizona is one of the premier localities for Wulfenite in the world. The best crystals have an intense red-orange hue, with larger than average crystals, and often with excellent gemminess. We were told that this piece was mined by Ed Over, who was one of the great US field collectors in the first half of the 20th Century. Ed made what is the most significant discovery of Wulfenite at the Red Cloud in 1938, producing some of the largest, and most vividly colored Wulfenite crystals from the locality (see https://www.mindat.org/photo-855887.html). This piece is a stellar example of these amazing crystals featuring a group of very sharp, highly lustrous, strong orange colored, tabular bladed measuring 2.3 cm, sitting aesthetically on matrix. With a good amount of lighting, you can see that the crystals are actually GEMMY in areas(!). No damage that I can find anywhere, and it's incredibly showy and fine quality. Based upon fair market value, and the fact that this piece is 85 years old, I would honestly put in the range of about $5,000 retail. This piece originally came from the collection of Laura and Stevia Thompson, the wife and daughter of well-known dealer and field collector, Wayne Thompson. From the collection of Vasco Trancoso, a medical doctor and prominent mineral collector from near Lisbon, Portugal (https://www.mindat.org/user-11954.html). He assembled his mineral collection over the course of 60 years, and built a fine worldwide display collection that we recently purchased. This piece is pictured on mindat.org at https://www.mindat.org/photo-183408.html
