A stunning WINDOWPANE quality wulfenite crystal, from early 1970s finds at the famous San Francisco Mine, caps this superb large thumbnail. It is of the highest competition quality, with a sharp, perfect, 1.6cm-across crystal perched on matrix for vertical display. It is hard to imagine better aesthetics for such a style of wulfenite. It is in a cluster but dominates it, and all is on matrix. This is a very high level competition thumbnail, bought by a VERY knowledgeable buyer at the time it came out, from the people who mined them...a fine provenance to validate it but there is more: Bill was not merely knowledgeable, he was among the top authorities on Mexico at the time and intimately involved with museums and with field collecting; and is in fact also the author of the still-definitive book MINERALS OF MEXICO (1987); as well as a competition TN collector himself with his wife Sharon. We value this at $1500-2000 easily. This was one of the prizes of their competition thumbnail collection, last exhibited in the late 1980s and lost since then.
