Item Description

Some of the finest crystallized examples of Witherite are those from Southern Illinois. The sometimes large, robust crystals with their beautiful stepped faces and soft golden hues make them instantly recognizable among mineral collectors. While Witherite is a simple carbonate species, it's notably difficult to find in any capacity, especially in crystals of this size and quality. This miniature sized specimen features several beautiful, very pale golden colored (silvery), pseudohexagonal crystals of Witherite measuring up to 2.8 cm aesthetically sitting on matrix from the Rosiclare Mining District in Illinois. The underside of the piece reveals a small gemmy partial crystal of purple Fluorite, just to reinforce where it's from. The specimen is in fine shape on the display side, but it's not complete on the bottom / back where it was removed from the pocket wall. A great example of this now incredibly hard to find high quality material. Valued at $650. From the worldwide collection of David Burgess (1951-2016). David was a prolific species collector from Newington, Connecticut, and the namesake for the extremely rare cobalt arsenate species Burgessite, which he discovered.
