Item Description

A rare, titanium-bearing member of the Vesuvianite group, Wiluite is only found in a few localities worldwide, with the type localities in Russia producing the most desirable specimens. This very large, small-cabinet specimen features a predominant, good quality, euhedral, blackish-green, 2.8 cm Wiluite crystal. Doubly-terminated and nicely exposed on serpentinized matrix, the main crystal has a good luster that, when the lighting and reflections are just right, allows you to see and appreciate just how complex the tiered prism faces are. There are several smaller crystals on the matrix, and all-in-all they make for an aesthetic, highly-representative piece from the Co-type Locality (both are in the same area). These crystals were originally thought to be Vesuvianite, until later detailed analysis determined these to be a new species. From the collection of Kurt Hefendehl, a well-known German collector all over Europe with worldwide contacts to dealers and collectors. He started collecting seriously at the age of 14 and his great and varied worldwide collection reached over 6000 pieces.
