Item Description
Weloganite is a very rare hydrated Na-Sr-Zr-carbonate and is a Holy Grail Canadian and Quebec species. The famous and extinct Francon Quarry in Montreal is the Type Locality and easily produced the world's finest examples of the species. Most specimens were collected in the late 1960s and early 1970s. A fairly large 3.0 cm, beautiful rich amber, lustrous, translucent, platy, typically hexgonal and tapered terminated crystal (termination is one the narrow end) is very aesthetically set on the blocky small cabinet limestone matrix. The color is oustanding, very near the best you can ask for in weloganite and extremely uncommon in larger specimens and crystals. The lustre is typical of better material of this species: a sort of waxy medium lustre. White crusts on the weolgoanite are strontianite, which has bright white fluorescence. The piece dates from the famous find of colorful, large weloganites by Dr. Don Doell of approximately 30 years ago. Ex Bob Hauck Collection. A major display specimen, valued $1500
