Item Description
This piece is labeled as coming from the "Road Construction Quarry" on Mt Ida in Arkansas, but mindat.org states that all Wavellites listed from Mt Ida are erroneous, so we're leaving this one simply as coming from Montgomery County. It's possibly from the Mauldin Mountain Quarries, but the style isn't exactly what we've seen from this area. If anybody out there can give us some info as to specifically where this piece might have been found, please let us know. The specimen hosts several attractive soft green colored radiating aggregates of Wavellite measuring up to 6 mm across, which are surrounded by a pale greenish-white layer of botryoidal Wavellite on host rock matrix. As I said, the coloring and style is odd, and doesn't really resemble any other Arkansas Wavellites we've seen, so it's certainly a unique and eye-catching piece to add to your collection. From the worldwide mineral collection of Albert Lewis Kidwell (January 1, 1919 - August 16, 2008). Al was a well-known mineral collector and research geologist with Carter Oil Company and later Exxon Oil Company in Houston, Texas. The phosphate species Kidwellite was named in his honor in 1974.
