Item Description
A very hard to find old-time Wavellite specimen from this iron mine that dates back to the 1800s. This particular piece features rare stalactites of tan colored Wavellite, which have actually overgrown preexisting Goethite, forming a sculptural and certainly unusual style the for species. The underside of the specimen hosts a slightly pinkish colored layer of radiating groups of micro Wavellite crystals for a nice touch. For years these specimens were labeled as coming from "White Horse", but the agreed name for the locality is General Trimble's Mine. Don't miss out on this rare old specimen from this historic locale. From the collection of Richard ("Dick") Philip Hauck formerly of Bloomfield, New Jersey and now a resident of Franklin, New Jersey. The piece comes with an old label from George English, but oddly his name is crossed out, and there's an annotation that states the piece was acquired from Ward's in 1918. Dick is an avid collector of minerals, books, and mining memorabilia, along with being an accomplished author in the mineral world. Arguably, his greatest claim to fame is being the co-founder of the Sterling Hill Mining Museum in Ogdensburg, NJ. Dick purchased the land on which the Sterling Hill Mine resides in 1988, and the museum has been running strong since.
