Wavellite (from the type locality!)

Wavellite is found in hundreds of localities around the world, but the very first pieces came from the High Down Quarry in Devon, England, which is where this piece is from. This locality dates prior to 1785, but it's difficult to ascertain when quarrying actually started. The Wavellites from this locality are some of the most well-known, beloved and sought after examples of the species. It is said that the Wavellites from the High Down Quarry are likely to be of fossil origin. It is very difficult to find complete "balls" of wavellite from this locality; most specimens only yield partial hemispheres as seen on this specimen. This small cabinet specimen features classic golden to straw colored radiating hemispheres of wavellite lying flat against the black slate matrix. A dark brownish-orange colored "ring" can be seen around the exterior edges of some of the Wavellites. Fine old material from this historic locality. Priced in the inventory at $1,350.
