Item Description
Here's your chance to own a jar of fine-grained volcanic ash from the notorious May 18, 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens in Washington. This eruption of the active stratovolcano was the deadliest and most economically destructive volcanic event in US history. A massive debris avalanche, triggered by an earthquake of magnitude 5.1, caused a lateral eruption, that reduced the elevation of the mountain's summit from 9,677 ft (2,950 m) to 8,363 ft (2,549 m), leaving a 1 mile (1.6 km) wide horseshoe-shaped crater. For more than nine hours, a vigorous plume of ash erupted, eventually reaching 12 to 16 miles (20 to 27 km) above sea level (Wikipedia). I (Karl Warning) was living in Denver, Colorado at the time, nearly a 1000 miles away and we found a thin coat of ash on our cars and everything else. Total mass is 237 grams. A significant and historic US geologic event. Ex Richard Mushlitz collection.
