Item Description

Volborthite is an uncommon hydrated copper vanadate secondary mineral found in the oxidized zones of vanadium-bearing hydrothermal deposits. It is very rare in specimens from this small uranium-vanadium mine, that operated in the 1940s and 50s. Gemmy, olive-green microcrystals in isolated and clustered bladed rosettes and yellow-green crystals are richly and attractively scattered on the front of the sandstone matrix wedge along with an unidentified turquoise-blue mineral. There are fewer crystals scattered on the back of the piece. Ex John White Collection of Seattle and acquired in 1968, according to his label. Rare in this old-time quality and richness from this locale.
