Item Description

Volborthite is an uncommon hydrated Cu-vanadate secondary mineral found in the oxidized zones of vanadium-bearing hydrothermal deposits (MNDAT). Mineral specimens of ANY species are RARE from this old copper and gold mine, started in the early 19th century. This dramatically colorful and sculptural combination miniature is highlighted by the seam of striking iridescent yellow-green volborthite platelets sandwiched between bright turquoise-blue chrysocolla covering the porphyry matrix. The San Jose mine became famous in 2010 for the mine collapse and subsequent rescue of 33 miners who were trapped 700 meters underground for 69 days (MINDAT).
