Item Description

The area around Rapid Creek is well-known for producing a variety of fine quality phosphate minerals, primarily species like Lazulite and Augelite, but occasionally some attractive Vivianites have been found. This piece comes from the Crosscut Creek locality and featuring eye-catching, prismatic crystals of dark inky-blue colored Vivianite measuring up to 1.7 cm long, associated with little colorless Quartz crystals on matrix. Most of the Vivianites are undamaged, though there are some contacted areas, so it's not completely pristine. Display quality Vivianites from Rapid Creek are not terribly common, and this is an above-average example.
This piece comes from the collection of John Dagenais (#JD-643), a collector from the Pacific Northwest. John started collecting in 1969 and progressed to micromounting, and later built suites of specimens from the Chuquicamata Mine in Chile, the Tsumeb Mine in Namibia, the Majuba Hill Mine in Nevada, the Black Pine Mine in Montana and the Tintic District in Utah, among other places.
