VERY Large sand-included Calcite crystals

Item Description

A spectacular, sculptural, large specimen of calcite scalenohedrons included with sand from a difunct South Dakota locale, Rattlesnake Butte (Devils Hill) near Interior. The crystals, up to 11.7 cm (doubly terminated), grew in the Miocene sand matrix. You can even see the prominent horizontal bedding planes in the sandstone! An amazing, 360-degree specimen, with only modest contacting and rubbing. The finest example we have offered at auction. Old material seldom seen today in this quality. Ex Bob Trimingham Collection and purchased at Kelly's Rock Shop in Mack, Colorado in 1977. VERY RARE in such size, and aesthetic presentation!
