Item Description

An impressive, sculptural and classic style large calcite from the famed Tsumeb mine. Orangey-red iron oxides have lovingly tinted a striking plate of large flattened white calcite rhombs. The glassy, lustrous and translucent tapering rhombs have classic stepped-growth faces, for which this varietal is well-known for at the mine (circa 1970s, if I recall). The rhombs reach 8.5 cm on this monster piece. Modest fluorescence is a bonus. This is a magnificent and colorful large example of this most desirable varietal: Pristine, the piece would be well-worth $7000-10000 to tsumeb collectors, out there. However there is some damage, admittedly, and to our eyes it does detract although from a distance, it is simply not seen: There are two cleaved, hard-to-see rhombs nestled in the central-upper-interior of the display face, although aside from that only a couple trivial spots of bruising. Tsumeb, like Dal'negorsk is renowned for calcite diversity and quality and this is a very fine large example, that displays well from either side. Specimens of this size, style and quality are seldom on the market. Fairly valued at $2000, this is impressive in a case and BETTER in person. Mass is 8.2 pounds or 3.7 kilos.
