Item Description

Mineral specimens from the obscure, extinct Shafter Mining District in West Texas are RARE. The district is one of the very few precious metal (mainly silver) and polymetallic mining areas in Texas. Striking clusters and isolated crystals of lustrous, elongated gray vanadinite prisms are aesthetically set on the thin gossan matrix covered with contrasting orange to brown descloizite. The vanadinite clusters are nicely accented with glassy calcite rhombs. The back is nearly totally covered with vanadinite crystals. RARE, rich and showy old-time combination material dating from the 1940s or earlier. The mines were most active from the early 1900s until the 1930s. A MUST for the Texas, species or locality collector! This is the last such example we found in the Reynolds collection and we live in Texas...he was from California! None are for sale in local Texas collections, that we have seen - they all went west to the collectors of lead minerals in Arizona, back in the day.
