Item Description

This is a classic Vanadinite specimen from the famous Old Yuma Mine located just northwest of Tucson. If you draw an imaginary line west following Orange Grove Road to the other side of I-10, it's almost a straight line to the Old Yuma. This renowned locality is best known for its excellent Vanadinites, the best of which are arguably the top examples of the species from any locality in the Western Hemisphere (along with the Pure Potential Mine). While the Vanadinites from Mibladen, Morocco will be the standard for the species, the best crystals from the Old Yuma are just as fine in my mind, though the crystals are smaller. This piece is a lovely cabinet-sized specimen featuring well-formed, prismatic red colored, lustrous hexagonal crystals of Vanadinite measuring up to 6 mm across on matrix. The crystals look good up close and we've provided some macro photos to better show off the quality.
Ex George Loud Collection No. 41.7.2.3 AZ.16; 9580. George (born August 16, 1942) is a well-known mineral collector from Washington, DC and South Carolina respectively, and was a patent lawyer by trade for over 50 years. He assembled one of the great mineral collections in the U.S., comprising worldwide specimens, and in later years he sold the worldwide specimens to focus on minerals of the United States, specifically locality suites with an emphasis on amazing representation of species while still maintaining fine quality. The specimens remarkably range from micros to all the way up to large cabinets in size. We recently acquired most of his impressive 9000+ piece collection, and the VAST majority of these pieces will be offered here in the auctions, as we feel that everyone deserves and equal opportunity at acquiring these important, well-documented and fine quality specimens for their collections.
