Item Description
Here we have a wonderful display quality specimen of these fairly hard to find Vanadinites from the Puzzler Mine in the Castle Dome area of southwestern Arizona. This piece is loaded with dozens of incredibly lustrous, very sharp, well-formed barrel-shaped crystals measuring to about 3 mm, aesthetically covering the underlying matrix. The crystals are largely a dark brown hue, but if you look closely, you can see they are actually bi-colored, showing strong orange hues on the terminations. This extinct Pb-Ag-F-V-Mo-Cu Puzzler Mine, operated sporadically from the early 1900s to about 1952 (according to the entry on mindat.org), and is well-known for excellent vanadinite specimens. Classic, rich and typical material for the locale. No damage I can find.
This piece was originally in the collection of Dr. William F. Tatu, a radiologist from Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania.
Ex George Loud Collection No. 41.7.2.3 AZ.11; 8219. George (born August 16, 1942) is a well-known mineral collector from Washington, DC and South Carolina respectively, and was a patent lawyer by trade for over 50 years. He assembled one of the great mineral collections in the U.S., comprising worldwide specimens, and in later years he sold the worldwide specimens to focus on minerals of the United States, specifically locality suites with an emphasis on amazing representation of species while still maintaining fine quality. The specimens remarkably range from micros to all the way up to large cabinets in size. We recently acquired most of his impressive 9000+ piece collection, and the VAST majority of these pieces will be offered here in the auctions, as we feel that everyone deserves and equal opportunity at acquiring these important, well-documented and fine quality specimens for their collections.
