Item Description

Uvite Tourmaline is a classic species from the Power's Farm of New York, known for over 100 years for exceptional black tourmalines. This impressive and very rich large specimen hosts numerous, well-placed, sharp, splendent, jet-black crystals on the sculptural quartz-rich matrix. The impressive large crystal is 3.8 cm across. Scattered bruising, mostly on the periphery is certainly only a modest detraction to this imposing, rich and significant large piece. These have been historically been called schorl, dravite and uvite. "However, when the published rules of the recent IMA tourmaline nomenclature committee are followed, the correct species is dravite or uvite, often compositionally zoned with both species present in a single crystal. See: Chamberlain & Robinson (2013) Collector's Guide to the Minerals of New York State, Schiffer Books; and http://www.mindat.org/forum.php?read,7,364076,364076#msg-364076." (MINDAT). Probably an old-timer, many of these date back to the late 1800s and early 1900s when in this size, as more modern specimens look different. 2180 grams or 4.8 pounds mass. Very choice large and rich material from the Dick Hauck Collection.
