Uvite / Dravite Tourmaline (classic material)

Item Description

A beautiful thumbnail sized piece of these old classics from the Power's Farm locality in New York. These Tourmaline specimens from this historic locale are well-known to East Coast collectors. The piece hosts a group of sharp, lustrous, well-formed, jet-black, trigonal Tourmaline crystals, free of matrix. There is a bit of roughness on the edges, so the piece is not 100% pristine, but the terminations are in good shape. These Tourmalines were historically called Schorl and then iron-rich Uvite, but now the correct species is said to be Dravite or Uvite, often compositionally zoned with both species present in a single crystal. Classic and desirable old-time New York material. From the collection of Kay Robertson (#9619). Kay was a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics. She nearly lived 100 years from April 1920 - March 2020. Her label states that the piece once had a label from Leo Neal Yedlin, the famous micromount collector and former president of the New York Mineralogical Club, but sadly the label was lost over time.
