Uvarovite Garnet

Item Description

This large and historic chrome mine at Sarany dates back to 1889, and has been the source of some of the best Uvarovite Garnets ever found. It's the type locality for the species, which was named after Russian statesman, Count Sergey Uvarov. Production in the 1990s-2000s at the Saranovskii Mine yielded a good number of specimens of fine quality with that intense green color. Nothing new seems to be coming out lately, and it's a shame because there are few places in the world where you can find Uvarovite like this. This small cabinet specimen hosts many fine, sharp, lustrous, rich chrome green color Uvarovite crystals on chromite matrix. The crystals are dodecahedral in habit and measure up to 3 mm. We have photographed the crystals with a Canon MP-E 65 mm macro lens to better illustrate their quality. These particular specimens have become very hard to find on the market in recent years.
