Item Description
This fabulously sculptural large piece of so-called "Angle plated quartz" specimens, such as this are certainly some of the most fascinating and unusual quartz varietals from ANY world-wide locality. It has been sawed into its present exotic slab-like form. They have also been called "reticulated quartz." They occur only in Randolph County, North Carolina and Pickens and Oconee Counties, Georgia (our source has told us it is from an old Carolina collection, though). Mode of formation is imperfectly known. Formation theories include: 1) silica precipitated in cracks in red clay. The cracks are filled with micro-crystalline quartz and the "plates" are often encrusted with drusy quartz; or 2) pseudomorphs after calcite or barite. You can see drusy quartz on some of the plates. Whatever the mode of formation is, these are certainly a striking and rare quartz varietal. I have not seen these for sale in a long time, and am actually curious myself as to what they may be worth! This is near the end of the small lot of 7 pieces we recently were given to sell for a consignor, from an estate. MOST Unusual!
