Item Description

Aquamarines from Pakistan are well known in the market but aquamarines from Afghanistan are somewhat uncommon, and often very different in appearance from their Pakistani counterparts. This unusual, GEM clear aquamarine has the shape of a morganite - don't ask us why, we have no idea. It just has the shape, and so you do a double take, as it looks like a blue morganite based on first instinct. Of course, both are beryls but for some reason, each species tends to grow in different shapes in different locations, and the aquamarines from this part of the world are usually very elongated hexagonal crystals while morganites tend to be short on one axis (as this is). The crystal is 5 cm long and totally transparent and gemmy, with a rich blue color. You can look right through it to the matrix behind, which includes a nice feldspar crystal typical of the Pech pegmatites. An unusual gem specimen from the noted gem species suites of the Gene Meieran collection, assembled over the last 60 years. It is very hard to value such an oddity!
