Item Description

Turquoise was among the first gems to be mined, and while many historic sites have been depleted, some are still worked to this day. The word Turquoise is derived from the Greek word "Turkois" meaning "Turkish" because it was brought to the western world through Turkey - although it was actually first found in present day Iran. Pliny the Elder referred to the mineral as callais, the Iranians named it "pirouzeh" and the Aztecs knew it as "chalchihuitl". Part of Mexico are known for their fine Turquoise and this stone is superb for its color consistency and what appears to be "veins" of another mineral, but perhaps is just the host rock showing through. This beautiful "Oval Cabochon" gem has a lovely soft blue color that is contrasted wonderfully with the dark brown "veins". You don't see many Turquiose gems out there like this, and certainly is more than worthwhile for any collector. Valued at $384.90 high retail for its uniqueness and stark beautiful. A great Turquoise gem for any collector!
