Item Description
Here we have a wonderful and fine quality example of the famous old specimens of what used to be called Hexagonite from Balmat, New York. Hexagonite is the very rare manganese-bearing variety of amphibole specie Tremolite, which is distinguished by its lilac to purple color. The material is only found in two counties in New York. Originally, this material got its name because Hexagonite was supposedly a hexagonal form of Tremolite, but was shown to be monoclinic. That being said, this piece is a great representation of the material featuring a 5.6 cm gemmy and lustrous, purple Hexagonite crystal sitting on a sold matrix of smaller hexagonite crystals and needles. These are rare on the market today, and pieces with crystals of this size and quality are certainly desirable and sought after by collectors. From the collection of Gerry Morvell.
