Item Description

A striking 14.8 cm section of a pink rubellite tourmaline dramatically dominates this impressive and sculptural large specimen from the well-known Brown Derby pegmatite of Colorado. Adjacent crystal sections have pink cores and creamy rinds. The matrix is mostly Quartz with accenting patches of sparkly Lepidolite. Most people think of Amazonite and Smoky Quartz and Aquamarine from Colorado pegmatites, but the Brown Derby pegmatites are the best locality for Tourmaline and other associated species in the state. There are more sections on the back and bottom of the piece. 2231 grams or 4.9 pounds mass. Good timing. See the recent 2024 Rocks & Minerals article in Vol. 99, No. 2. The piece displays well without aid. Ex George Loud Collection No. 9059, a well-known Washington, DC and Georgia mineral collector. See: https://mineralogicalrecord.com/biographies_labels/george-loud for more information on George. We recently acquired most of his impressive over 9000 piece collection. Fine and large tourmaline specimens of this quality are very uncommon from here.
