Item Description

Maine is one the most historic and prolific gem crystal producing states in the US. Mining for gem Tourmalines dates back to the early 1800s, and they are still being found today. This piece is labeled as coming simply from "Oxford, Maine", and it's quite difficult to know specifically where it could have been found, though it could possibly be from the famous Mount Mica Quarry. On the surface, the piece might appear to be black, but with backlighting, it shows an intense blue Indicolite color, with good areas of gemminess. The back of the piece features a small amount of tan colored Cookeite, along with some white bladed Albite. The termination is complete, though it looks as though it might have grown against the pocket wall. If you collect gem crystals, thumbnails of minerals of Maine, this is an excellent old-time piece (the accompanying label states it was mined pre-1972) that would make a fine addition. Specimen weight is 13.23 grams.
