Topaz (classic material)

Item Description

The Wah Wah Mountains in southwestern Utah for well over a century have been producing beautiful sherry colored Topaz crystals, which are some of the best of their specific type from any locality in North America. This small cabinet sized piece is a beautiful example featuring a very sharp, GEM/gemmy, rather lustrous, classic, sherry colored prismatic crystal measuring 1.5 cm, on typical rhyolite matrix. As far as I can see, the crystal appears to be undamaged. A very showy and eye-catching specimen of this well-known and beautiful gem material.
From the collection of John Whatley, a well-known Georgia collector (1939-2022). John had many interests and hobbies, and favorite hobby was collecting rocks and minerals. He was a member of the Augusta and Aiken, SC Gem and Mineral Society. He also enjoyed collecting arrowheads and he co-authored the book, An Overview of Georgia Projectile Points and Select Cutting Tools. He was a member of the Georgia, South Carolina, and Alabama Archaeology Societies and he also enjoyed volunteering in the Archaeology Department at SRS.
