Titanite (var: Yttrium-bearing Titanite) (old specimen) (ex Josef Vajdak)

Item Description

A seldom seen Yttrium-bearing Titanite specimen from the classic old locality at Kragerø, Norway. The piece features a few thick, "wedge"-shaped, chocolate brown colored crystals measuring up to 1.6 cm with associated black crystals of Ferro-hornblende on beige Calcite matrix. This piece comes with a label from noted rarities dealer, Josef Vajdak, which states the piece dates back to the 19th century, but it also states that Kragerø is the type locality for Titanite, which according to mindat.org, is not true as they list co-type localities in Germany and New York for the species. The piece is still a wonderful important historic specimen and would make a great addition to any worldwide Titanite collection, a suite of historic specimens, or minerals from classic European localities.
