Item Description
Titanite is well known from different worldwide environments, but crystals from the various pegmatites in Jefferson County, Montana are certainly rare. This piece is a beautiful, rich honey-gold color, sharp, resinous, well-formed, single, untwinned "blade" of Titanite from the famous Boulder Batholith. The piece is crystallized on both sides, with well-defined faces, and actually is fairly gemmy on the corners when backlit. The defunct and outdated name for Titanite was Sphene (from the Greek sphenos (?????), meaning "wedge", and this particular crystal is a great example of a classic "wedge"-shaped Titanite. A great specimen for a gem thumbnail collector, a collector of pegmatite minerals, or hard to find US mineral specimens.
