Item Description

This rare and unusual halide species is best known from Greenland, where the finest examples are found. Thomsenolite dates back to 1868 and is named after Hans Peter Jorgen Julius Thomsen who has a chemistry professor at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark. The habit of the crystals is actually monoclinic, though they look almost tetragonal (prismatic). This is a classic specimen of this beloved and incredibly hard to find material from the type locality, the Ivigtut Cryolite Deposit in Greenland. The piece is loaded with superb crystallized vugs filled with crystals which can be seen on all sides of the specimen. While most of the crystals are fairly small, the back of the piece hosts a very good sized crystal measuring a whopping 1.3 cm. If you collect rarities, or if you've ever wanted a piece of the interesting and unusual mineral, don't miss out on a chance to obtain a fantastic well-crystallized example from this historic deposit. Valued at $4,000 in the inventory.
