Item Description

Mining around Cavnic (formerly Kapnik) took place for centuries. Mindat.org states that the town dates back to at least 1336, and mining activity in the area dates back to the Roman age. The famous Cavnic Mine is the most well-known locality in the area, sadly closed now, but it produced a good amount of fine quality mineral specimens for decades. This piece is a superb quality toenail sized piece of Tetrahedrite featuring several very sharp, large, well-formed, metallic, dark steel-grey tetrahedral crystals measuring up to 2.7 cm on edge, with no matrix. The beautiful form of the crystals with their smooth broad faces and attractive modifying matte faces is very appealing. Very little damage, only a few small nicks. An eye-catching and certainly desirable example of these wonderful classics, that will be very hard to find going forward. It should be noted that Tetrahedrite is no longer a valid species, and these specimens are labeled as Tetrahedrite Subgroup unless the exact species is identified, which can only be done through chemical analysis. From the collection of Brian Kosnar, with a former dealer label stating it was collected in May of 2000.
