Item Description

Mineral specimens are very uncommon from this OLD (~1819!) underground Chile copper mine, reportedly the world's biggest (MINDAT). Large patches and clusters of lustrous, sharp, dark metallic-gray tetrahedrite crystals are richly and dramatically scattered on the vuggy large sculptural porphyry matrix with fields of small sparkly quartz points. Bright golden chalcopyrites on the back are a nice accessory. From the worldwide mineral collection of Albert Lewis Kidwell (January 1, 1919 - August 16, 2008). Al was a well-known mineral collector and research geologist with Carter Oil Company and later Exxon Oil Company in Houston, Texas. The phosphate species Kidwellite was named in his honor in 1974. Al acquired this RARE and rich large older combination piece in 1964 from H.H. Hanke. The piece displays well without aid.
