Item Description
There are a few methods to producing synthetic rubies, but most people are familiar with the CVD method, which stands for chemical vapor deposition (it's the process often used in the semiconductor industry to produce thin films). In the case of synthetic ruby, a small seed crystal is placed into a vacuum chamber containing some kind gas (it varies for different gem types), and over the course of hours or days, the molecules from the gas attach themselves to the substrate of seed gem and build up a larger stone layer by layer. At their core, they are chemically identical to natural rubies, though they are actually more "pure" because synthetic rubies do not contain the minor trace elements found in natural stones. This is a beautiful vibrant hot pink colored "step oval" cut stone with eye-clean clarity. Synthetic stones have their place in the gem world, especially for those who are looking to purchase a high quality item without breaking the bank. There is nothing wrong with purchasing a synthetic stone, provided that both the buyer and seller are aware that the gem has been grown, and didn't come from a natural source. In fact, it's important to note that in 2018 the Federal Trade Commission updated its guidelines stating that jewelers are legally obligated to inform clients that they are purchasing a lab-grown gemstone. A great gem for any fan of high quality material, as this is a superb synthetic in terms of color and clarity. We obtained this gem from the collection of Ed Swoboda, the world-renowned gem and mineral dealer, field collector, miner, entrepreneur and beloved figure in the hobby.
