Item Description
Very uncommon, this is a large and fine doubly terminated compound crystal of the unique, organic-based mineral mellite, most of which come from Hungary. This is an aluminum mellitate (benzene hexacarboxylate) hydrate, a rare secondary mineral in lignite deposits. You simply do not see these often, and they have been found in only ten localities worldwide (MINDAT). This striking crystal has dense, textbook tetragonal stepped-growth form on both sides, fine luster, translucence and classic mottled honey-brown color. A bit of out-of-sight bruising is noted on both sides. This is a very fine example of the rare species we have offered at auction. Ghostly white LW UV and purple SW UV fluorescence. Ex Matioli Collection. A VERY interesting mineral!
