Item Description

Here we have a rarely seen Sulfur specimen from the La Pepa Mine in the Atacama Desert of Chile. The listing on mindat.org states that this locality produced "several millions of Chilean pesos currency in silver" in the late 1700s!! We've only had one other specimen of this material to offer in the auctions from this locality. If you're a fan of crystallized Sulfur or minerals from Chile, do not miss out on this one. The piece hosts dozens of sharp, well-formed, rather lustrous, bright lemon yellow color crystals measuring up to 7 mm on host rock matrix. With a bit of magnification you can see that the crystals feature attractive skeletal faces and look beautiful up close. From the collection of Chester ("Chet") S. Lemanski Jr. of Browns Mills, New Jersey (https://www.mindat.org/user-461.html). Collection #20999CL. Chet was born 1947 in started collecting minerals circa 1957. He worked briefly as a drill runner at the famous Sterling Mine, in Ogdensburg, New Jersey and from 1987 to 1990 he helped convert the mine into a public access mining museum. He has held the role of treasurer, vice president and president of the Franklin-Ogdensburg Mineralogical Society (FOMS), and has been a board member and vice president of the Franklin Mineral Museum. The rare copper arsenate, Lemanskiite was named in his honor in 1999.
