Sulfur on Calcite w/ bitumen (classic locale)

A stunning, sharp, beautifully set, 4.0 cm, orthorhombic rhombic dipyramidal sulfur crystal dramatically highlights this very fine small cabinet from the famous Cozzo Disi Mine of Sicily. Smaller crystals are fine accessories. The lemon-yellow crystals are transparent to translucent and have typical resinous luster. Bitumen is included in areas of the large sulfur crystal. Drusy calcite on the matrix is stained brown by bituminous material and the underlying matrix is massive calcite. The calcite fluoresces pink. The bit of contacting to the upper left-hand corner of the large crystal is noted, but certainly has only minimal impact to the very high aesthetic quality of this specimen. The mine closed in 1988.
