Item Description
Here we have something that is rarely offered on the market. This cabinet sized piece is an incredibly hard to find specimen from the Boling Salt Dome locality southwest of Houston (specifically NNE of the town of Newgulf). I encourage everybody to read the statistics about the locality on mindat.org ( https://www.mindat.org/loc-30972.html ), my favorite being the sheer size of dome itself, which was calculated at 31.3 cubic miles. We've only had a handful of these specimens to offer over the years, and as far as I can find in our stock, this is the last one we have to offer. The piece is a section of a rotary drill core used to essentially gauge the magnitude or volume of a commodity in a certain section of the deposit. The piece features an open exposed surface lined with attractive bright lemon yellow Sulfur crystals, the largest being a sharp, well-formed example measuring 1.1 cm. The main Sulfur crystal is undamaged and shows good inner gemminess when backlit, but others are not complete. Minerals from Texas are not terribly common to find on the market, but this piece is different than most you'll see due to the interesting nature of its extraction and the shape of the piece from the drill core. It's important to note that actual crystallized sulfur from this locality is extremely hard to find because they actually dissolved the sulfur with superheated water and compressed air and collected it from deep wells underground, so nearly all the crystals were "melted" away. A must have specimen for any fan of worldwide Sulfur specimens or minerals of Texas. PLEASE NOTE: Due to the weight of the specimen, an additional shipping charge will be required. If you have any questions about shipping, please contact us before bidding.
