Sulfur & Aragonite w/ bitumen (Kidwell Coll.)

Beautiful canary-yellow gemmy sulfur crystals are richly festooned on the large undulating matrix of intergrown knobs of translucent dogtooth aragonite crystals. The sulfur crystals reach about 1.5 cm. Some of the sulfur crystals on the left side have patches of brown bitumen (dead hydrocarbons), a colorful contrasting accessory. This very rich and sculptural combination old-timer is from the well-known Cozzo Disi Mine of Sicily. Nearly pristine, with only one spot of contacting in the interior. Certainly acceptable in the context of an old-timer, such as this. Neon-pink aragonite fluorescence. Ex Al Kidwell Collection of Houston and acquired in 1980. His label says calcite, but this is aragonite. Al was a well-known mineral collector and research geologist for Exxon. He passed away in 2008. The Phosphate Kidwellite is named for him. A classic and excellent large old-time sulfur and aragonite combination from Sicily.
