Item Description
An impressive calcite vein in this section of a 5.25 inch in diameter rotary drill core hosts a dramatic 7.5 x 4.2 cm vug lined with dogtooth calcite crystals and a striking, beautiful, sharp, 2.8 cm lustrous, translucent, lemon-yellow sulfur crystal plus smaller sulfur crystals. The core is Jurassic-aged limestone (201.1 to 145 Mya). The well-known large Boling Dome, southwest of Houston, is a shallow salt dome (about 500 feet below the surface) that has produced oil, gas, sulfur, salt and other minerals. Oil production began in 1925 and sulfur production began in 1929. The sulfur mine closed in 1993. The limestone is the caprock above the sulfur deposit. Crystallized sulfur is uncommon from here, as the mining company dissolved the sulfur with superheated water and used compressed air to extract the sulfur to the surface. From the worldwide mineral collection of Al Kidwell (January 1, 1919 - August 16, 2008). Al was a well-known mineral collector and research geologist with Carter Oil Company and later Exxon Oil Company in Houston, Texas. Rarely seen on the specimen markets, because oil executives in Texas kept them for their homes and for gifts!
