Item Description

A wonderful small cabinet sized display specimen of what are the finest crystals of Sulfohalite from anywhere in the world. The Searles Lake locality in California has not only produced the best examples for the species, but it's also the type locality for Sulfohalite. There are only FIVE localities in the world for the species, but you really only see pieces from Searles Lake on the market. This specimen features excellent, sharp, very well-formed, gemmy/translucent, lovely golden colored octahedral crystals of Sulfohalite measuring up to 2.3 cm across associated with white Trona for a nice accent. If you look closely, you can see some of the crystals have slight internal "phantoms", which is not often seen in these crystals. Most crystals are in good shape, though some are not complete, but it's forgivable for the size and quality of the crystals and the specimen in general, as you rarely see multiple crystals together on one piece like this, especially in a small cabinet sized specimen. An impressive and fine quality example of this rare sodium sulfate halide. Priced in our inventory at $2,500. PLEASE NOTE: This mineral is slowly soluble in cold water, so do not attempt to wash it or expose it to moisture. From the collection of Robert (Bob) Reynolds who passed in August of 2020. Bob was a well-known fossil and mineral expert and former Curator of Earth Sciences at the San Bernardino County Museum in California. The rare phyllomanganate-chromate species Reynoldsite was named in his honor in 2011.
