Strontianite var: Emmonite on Baryte

Item Description

An old classic specimen of "Emmonite", which at one time was a valid species, but it now defined as a calcium-bearing variety of Strontianite. This piece is from the first reported locality for the material, the Großkogel in Brixlegg in the Tyrol of Austria. Attractive, off-white colored radiating aggregates measuring up to 8 mm across, sit atop tightly intergrown blades of cream colored Baryte matrix. Nearly all of the "Emmonite" groups are damage free, and the piece has a saw mark on the bottom, allowing it sit beautifully on its own for easy display. A really attractive and good quality cabinet sized piece of this old material that dates back to the 1800s.
From the collection of Kurt Hefendehl (#88 O), a well-known German collector all over Europe with worldwide contacts to dealers and collectors. He started collecting seriously at the age of 14 and his great and varied worldwide collection reached over 6000 pieces. He was very active mineralogically until shortly before his passing in 2020 at the age of 82. Considering his collection had a large number of pieces, it still had an unusually high standard of quality from most worldwide localities. He particularly specialized in all classics as well as minerals of the Black Forest, where he spent much time collecting. His Black Forest and German subcollections went to his good friend Wolfgang Wendel.
