Item Description
Jasper is defined as an opaque microcrystalline variety of Quartz that can contain up to 20% foreign material. This is what determines the color and appearance of the stones. It is because of these foreign materials, Jasper is rarely uniform in color, it is usually multicolored, striped, mottled and/or spotted. Here we have a lovely example of Stone Canyon Jasper, which comes form a private cattle ranch in the California central coastal region in an area half way between Los Angeles and San Francisco. The material is beautiful when it is polished. This "Freeform Cabochon" cut gem has lovely tan and off white color banding creating a pattern resembling a slice of petrified wood. I have not seen many of these stones on the market over the years, but collectors know that this is rare material, and certainly highly desirable Jasper from North America.
