Item Description

Mineral specimens of ANY variety are VERY RARE from urban zones, let alone from the Capital of the United States. This piece has a striking 2.0 cm rosette of lustrous, translucent, light brown to ivory-colored, stilbite crystals is dramatically set on the corner of the block of lava matrix. Isolated stilbites are festooned on two sides and a vein of stilbite crystals is noted on this very rich and very rare older specimen. Most of the city is built on the marshy terrain of the Coastal Plain. Piedmont Province rocks are widely exposed in Rock Creek Park and at Great Falls, a few miles northwest of the District's limits (MINDAT). A fine provenance. Ex University of Pennsylvania Collection.
