Item Description

Inordinately large and impressive stilbite specimen from the famous Prospect Park Quarry of New Jersey. The dramatically mounded and rounded specimen of densely intergrown, lustrous brown sheaves of oxide-tinted stilbite blades strikingly resembles a human brain. The spare matrix and the contact on the back revealing the radial growth of the elongated stilbite blades adds much character. This well-known and extinct New Jersey Trap Rock has produced many outstanding Zeolite Group species plus other species with stilbite being one of the signature Zeolite species. The quarry opened in 1901 and produced into the 2000s. The piece has an excellent provenance. Undoubtedly older material having been in the Paterson Museum and then in the Eric Stanchich Collection, a well-known New Jersey collector. A significant and classic large stilbite from the locale!
