Item Description

This very old specimen is a classic textbook east coast Staurolite, with crystals, including its famous cruciform-twin habit, embedded in a fine-grained schist. The largest twin is about 2.5 cm, and there are numerous Staurolites throughout this large cabinet piece. Mm-size Garnets, which can also be another indicator-mineral of metamorphism, can be found scattered throughout the schist matrix. From the Fitchburg, Massachusetts area, this excellent Staurolite specimen was previously in the collections of George W. Carpenter (elected treasurer of the Academy in 1825) and the Philadelphia Academy of Sciences.
