Item Description
"Star" gems exhibit a phenomenon known as asterism. This occurs when a polished stone (typically a cabochon) is cut in a certain way to correctly orient the thin, fibrous inclusions inside of the so that a star-shaped reflection will appear on the surface when viewed under concentrated lighting. In the case Ruby, the star will always have 6 legs, but there are other gems like Garnet that can show 4-rayed stars. When it comes to "star" gems, Rubies are among the best-known examples. This stone is a very good example showing sharp, well-defined "legs" that float over the rich reddish-purple hue of the Ruby. The stone is opaque for all intents and purposes, but still very good quality for what it is.
The high retail price on this gem is $742.00
