Spinel (Var: Pleonaste) with Diopside and Calcite

A classic and hard to find matrix specimen of Spinel from the Aldan Shield. The Spinels, in particular, stand out among the 190 species found there of micros, rares, and uglies, as some of the finest crystallographic examples of this rare comples spinel crystal habit. This is a LARGE crystal, at 500 grams! They are notable not only for their impressive size but their attractive, modified forms and high luster. This lustrous, 7.1 cm whopper has attached green Diopside that it is partially intergrown and also acts as matrix. Beige-toned Calcite adds accent to this fine small cabinet specimen. Formerly in the Fersman Mineralogical Museum collection, and for what it is worth this is a significant specimen that is very much better in person. 500 grams. valued $2500
